The Equity Fund is building the power needed to stop climate change and create an equitable clean energy future through a sustained multi-state initiative.
The Equity Fund is strategically building power by:
Investing in the leadership and organizing of diverse communities
(people of color, indigenous people, those most impacted by climate change)
Winning equitable climate and clean energy campaigns
Accelerating equitable climate solutions and engaging voters
Grantmaking by the Numbers
Power Building Summit
The Equity Fund held our inaugural Power Building Summit in July 2018 for organizers to learn, share, and network. The Summit strengthened collaboration in and across states and uncovered opportunities to scale up our collective power. Over fifty directors and organizers learned about the latest in climate equity policy campaigns, nonpartisan civic engagement strategies, and more.
The Climate Equity Accelerator
The Climate Equity Accelerator provides grantees with coaching and technical assistance to advance policies that materially improve the conditions of communities experiencing the causes and effects of climate change. The Accelerator strengthens the skills, capacity, and leadership of community organizations to drive equitable energy policy.
The Equity Fund’s support has resulted in more than 1 million actions to reach, educate, and mobilize community members, voters, and activists on climate and clean energy equity. Some highlights:
115,000 mailings were sent to New Mexican voters, based on cutting-edge research on New Mexicans’ attitudes on climate and energy.
Partners in Virginia knocked on over 100,000 doors and made over 300,000 phone calls.
Minnesota grantees experimented with new voter contact methods, including deep canvass at the door and canvassing public transit riders.
In Florida, grantees expanded from Miami and Orlando to Jacksonville and Tampa, combining emergency disaster response with climate justice organizing in the wake of devastating hurricanes, while building campaigns to expand access to renewables.
Our Minnesota grantees formed a powerful, multiracial coalition that is advancing a range of policies to move the state towards 100% renewable energy.
New Mexico grantees are leading their first ever clean energy campaigns in rural New Mexico, reaching thousands of Latinx and Native American voters on climate justice and clean energy.
In Pennsylvania, Equity Fund grantees are uniting urban, suburban and rural Pennsylvanians across class and race to fight extractive industries and advance policies like community solar.
Our Virginia grantees are building a new base of African American climate voters by connecting local issues such as coal dust to impacts like sea level rise and the state’s opportunity to lead on clean energy.
